Here's a short review and install pics of the Domino A.L.C.

Upon opening the box I found myself looking at a pretty sturdy unit with a small LCD screen and a nice shiny cpu water block attached to the end of cheap plastic looking tubes hooked in the end.

Btw the system being used for this test is listed in my signature below.

Lets get to the difficulties of installing this unit. The manual was pretty helpful and labeling which backplate was for socket 1366 which is for the i7 920 being used on this test. The backplate came with two adhesive strips attached in front where it will be connected to the motherboard. One of the annoyances I found concerning the backplates was the screws were a bit big and had to apply a bit of force on them to get them through the PCB of the mobo.

Another annoyance was, since the case being used in this test was a HAF 932, you will have to choose between losing your 230mm side intake fan OR losing your top exhaust fan. I chose to lose the top exhaust fan in this case. See pics of install below.

Here's one with the panel closed.

Now that's installed. Let's get on with the performance part. Since I have an overclocked i7 920 @4.0Ghz, I only stress tested my CPU with the DOMINO under full fan speed settings. Didn't bother with the lower settings as I doubt it would be able to cool my processor to reasonable levels at full load.

With my i7 being overclocked to 4.0Ghz with a settings of (200x20 1.312vcore and 1.30 QPI/VTT voltage) here are the highest temps taken with REALTEMP after half hour of Prime95 and 20 mins of Linx.

Prime 95 - 83-83-82-81 @ 22 C Ambient
Linx - 82-81-80-79 @ 22 C Ambient

I must say i was very disappointed with these results as I was expecting at least a decrease in temps when comparing it against my old cooler which was a Xigmatek DK. While under load i touched the hose and radiator and they were really getting to the "too hot to touch" temps. Also the highest coolant temp was @41 C.

Anyway to wrap this up, I really no see a reason to spend 70-80 dollars on a all in one water cooler that can be easily outperformed by a $40 air cooler. Even with sound levels this product cannot compete as in quiet mode the temps just got too high for me when gaming (70-71) and the performance mode was already too loud (some people can probably find the sound levels of performance mode tolerable). However, with full settings, this pretty much sounds like one of the front fans in the XPS 630i@100%. I know you guys what I'm talking about when it comes to the front Jet Engines cough... cough...fans.

An update on this cooler. I've tried changing orientations of fans in my case but there were no changes in temps. However, from just putting the top exhaust fan sitting outside of the case. There was a decrease of 4-5 degrees. I would change the orientation of the Domino's fan but you will need an angled screwdriver to accomplish this as the space in between the top side and the bottom side of the fan is really small and will not fit a conventional screwdriver. I think it is possible for this cooler to accomplish Corsair's H50 temps if you customize a push and pull setup exhausting the air out instead of pulling air in into the radiator. Keep in mind the case i used for the test is the HAF 932, it will probably different if the case that was used doesn't move air like the 932 does.

Sure sounds like the heat disipation in the pumping unit is poor!

Makes me wonder what is under the hood of the unit . . .

If you run the system with the side panel off, does the performance improve any? I am wondering if the air intake is too restricted with the unit inside the case . . . just a thought . . .

Also, do you have a way to measure the air inside the case during your tests? Since the "ambiant" temperature of the air is going to limit the cooling, I am wondering what the Tdelta (difference in temperature between coolant temp and air inside case temp is).

David

I've tried running it with the panels open as well, same temps. This was actually how i was able to feel how warm the hose and radiator were... also the chipset got too hot to touch. From this experience, i learned why it's necessary to use a block for the chipset as the air blowing from the usual HSF to cool the chipset is not present with a cpu waterblock.

While that is very true, when I used the H50 on my P6T V2, the temps never went over 45-50C on the Northbridge chipset. How hot are your temps on the NB? Yours might be running hotter, mainly because you are using SLI. It puts more stress on the chipset, plus the added heat from the second card.

I think they sell a fan for that NB block on the P6T. If you also notice, I believe they designed that board's heatsink to work with the stock intel cooler, if you look at the way the fins are, and the way they sort of "channel" the air through. When I used the stock Intel heatsink, my temps on the CPU were obviously hotter, but the chipset ran at around 32-35C.

Just some things to ponder about.

wow thanks for reminding me! I do recall asus putting in a small fan for the Chipset if u were going to use a waterblock. I should stil have that Ill install it later. My venomous won't get here until next week, might as well put that chipset cooler in.

I think my chipset was around 47-48... is that cooking per nb temps?

No those temps are perfect for the NB, especially when there is no fan on it. I never used the fan for the chipset at all when I had the P6T. On that board, anywhere from 35C-55C is pretty good. If you start getting the temps past that margin, then I would use the fan.

Just for reference, the EVGA X58 SLI motheboards NB runs at 60C+ with a fan on it, mainly because it has the NF200 chip for Tri-SLI. Comparing your boards temps with this, I would say you are doing real good.

You can even replace the chipset thermal compound with something else if you want to try and get some lower temps. On the chipset though, I usually make the thermal compound layer a bit thicker than I would normally apply on the CPU.

cool, that's some great info buddy. Never would've thought of replacing the compound on the NB.
